2024 Week 1: Train to JB
Happy 2024! My resolutions are:
- Be kind
- Don't fall sick
- Learn about the real world (be less ignorant)
- Find a meaningful new job
- Exercise daily
- Draw daily
- Take myself out weekly
The main ones are #1 and #2 I suppose. I have been making headway on #3, having just read A Short History of the World in 50 Places. At this point this is about the most world history I can handle. Most history books I browsed at the bookstore seem to be about war, invasions, exploitation, colonisation etc. - all very off-putting when what I really want is to understand the culture of different places. So I might have to stick to fluffy books, maybe cultural histories and travelogues, for now.
I also got A Short History of the World in 50 Books which looks fun.
Apart from that I've been reading Anna Karenina. It's surprisingly easy to read - and surprisingly very hard to summarise. There isn't really a plot, I think. It's kinda like a Mike Leigh movie where not much happens but you somehow feel like you live there and you actually know the characters inside-out.
Eh...
My mood has been erratic all week. I have chosen to ignore my emotions as they do not seem to relay very useful information. Instead I will focus on what I can control i.e. water, rest, food, sunlight, exerise, me-time.

Mon: ran in a half-assed way (wasn't feeling it but just did it for form's sake since it was 1 Jan), ate leftover turkey with frozen veggies, wrote, read, took a nap, did pet chores, dinner at Jon's parents'
Tue: did Deliveroo as an excuse to cycle, leftovers for lunch, 2-6pm work, pet chores, dinner at bus interchange, Only Connect and read
Wed: ran to McDonald's and ate there, dumped about 20+ books at library, had porridge for lunch. 2-6pm work, then collected Jill and ate spag bol for dinner.
Thu: JB day! took the train (!) for once with our neighbours and ate at The Replacement cafe, did a bunch of shopping for groceries and household goods. Notable finds include the mythical Magiclean toilet bleach (last 2 bottles at Mr DIY), fancy teas from BOH and M&S, zucchini, and Jon's massive Mr DIY haul.
Fri: ran to claim $3 Paylah and came home for breakfast. Felt upset and went out for a walk. Made gyu-don and roasted zucchini for lunch, 2-6pm work, dinner at J8 food court. Felt emo and cried on Jon and Jon fell asleep and I eventually did too.
Sat: woke up feeling OK. Reorganised bedroom, went for a Roo-cycle, groomed Thumper, ate cabbage-mussel pasta for lunch, drank coffee, vacuumed, dumpster-dived, wrote
